Russia's Pacific Fleet was established in 1731 as part of the Imperial Russian Navy. The fleet was known as the Okhotsk Military Flotilla and Siberian Military Flotilla, formed to defend the country's interests in the Russian Far East region along the Pacific coast.

At present, the Russian Pacific Fleet, as an operational-strategic alliance of the Navy, incorporates "strategic missile submarines, multi-purpose nuclear-powered and diesel-driven submarines, surface ships for operations in oceanic and near-sea areas, naval missile-carrying aviation, anti-submarine and fighter aviation, ground troops, units of ground and coastal troops", according to the Russian Defence Ministry.
