Russian and Syrian Marines take part in joint military exercises in the eastern Syrian port of Tartus.

Russian and Syrian Marines held joint drills in the eastern Syrian port of Tartus on April 20.

Tartus has hosted the Russian Navy maintenance and support facility since the 1970s. Currently, the Tartus facility is the Russian Navy's only support base in the Mediterranean Sea. An agreement between Russia and Syria on the expansion and upgrades of the facility was signed on January 18. Work on the facility will start by the end of 2017 and take around five years to complete.
