On July 30, Russian Railways launched a new modern train maintenance yard in Moscow. The Podmoskovnaya station will be used for all kinds of maintenance and repair works for Russia’s new generation electric trains. The opening ceremony was attended by company president Vladimir Yakunin, Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
The new train yard is located right in the center of Moscow. It is planned to enhance the quality of the railroad services and reduce technical maintenance costs.

The facility operates cutting-edge equipment which can be used for all kinds of railroad maintenance and repair works.

A new museum and production complex was also inaugurated during the ceremony.

The culmination of the events was the opening the Podmoskovnaya steam train facility, a museum and production complex – the first of its kind in Russia. It will be used for doing repair and maintenance works on currently operating steam trains.

"This facility is truly unique as it is both a historic facility and a museum. It has been preserved and restored to its original form as it was designed in 1901. In addition, it is a train maintenance facility," Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, said.

Yakunin explained that the new facility will service the Lastochka and Sapsan express trains.

Moscow railways amount for nearly 50 percent of all suburban railway services across Russia. Moscow trains carry 680 million passengers a year. Some two million people use them daily.

The facility comprises several modern-style buildings built in 1901. They were preserved and restored by workers of the Moscow railways. The museum will recreate the setting and atmosphere of the beginning of the 20th century. Currently, the facility operates seven steam locomotives.
