“I’m not claiming divinity. I’ve never claimed purity of soul. I’ve never claimed to have the answers to life. I only put out songs and answer questions as honestly as I can,” Lennon said in one of his final interviews, first published by Rolling Stone.this year.
Lennon was shot at 10:50 pm as he and his wife were returning to their apartment building from the Hit Factory recording studio. The musician, singer, composer, and political activist died two months after his 40th birthday. Lennon would have turned 70 on October 9 this year.
The Strawberry Fields in Central Park, opposite Lennon’s former apartment, are considered his public memorial, although he is not buried here. Lennon was cremated, and his ashes were passed on to his wife, Yoko Ono.
Ono released a statement in tribute to Lennon saying, “On this tragic anniversary, please join me in remembering John with deep love and respect. In his short-lived life of 40 years, he has given so much to the world. The world was lucky to have known him. We still learn so much from him today. John, I love you!”
