On April 29, the new façade of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater and the renewal of the adjoining Theater Square were ceremonially unveiled after reconstruction. Now Muscovites and tourists can see the façade that was originally designed by architect Albert Cavos in 1856.
Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said that the opening of the square and the unveiling of the façade had a special significance in the run-up to Victory Day. Russian Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev emphasized that the Bolshoi Theater was not only a cultural monument but also a symbol of victory.

The large-scale restoration of the Bolshoi Theater was launched in 2005 and is expected to be finished by 2011.
