Armor with deer horn helmet, belonged to Honda Tadakatsu (1548–1610), whom historians call the samurai of samurai. Tadakatsu is said to have worn this armor in about 50 of 60 campaigns.
Honda Tadakatsu (pictured) always carried two swords, and was never wounded in battle. The martial caste of the samurai was established in the 12th century and is primarily remembered through the code of honor, which glorified absolute loyalty to the emperor and utter contempt for death.
The word “samurai” is derived from the verb saburau, literally translated “to serve a higher person.” The mysterious warriors have been glorified in various legends, songs, ballads and specific rituals.
By the 12th century, the basics of the unwritten moral code of the samurai, the Way of the Bow and the Horse, were formed, which later transformed into a code of commandments, Bushido (Way of the Warrior).
The organizers of the world’s most comprehensive exhibition of the art of the samurai say that it took many years to compile this collection.
