MOSCOW, December 28 (RIA Novosti) - Vyacheslav Koloskov, President of the Russian Football Union (RFS), described 2004 results as discouraging.

"They [results] did not please or satisfy anyone," the RFS chief told a press conference on Tuesday.

Mr. Koloskov recalled the Russian national team's first unsuccessful game at the European championship in Portugal. "At the European event we did not achieve the minimum objective of passing the group stage although we did have chances," said Mr. Koloskov.

Mr. Koloskov also deplored the fact that the start of the new qualification series (ahead of the 2006 world cup) was not successful for the Russian team. "However, we must not give up," he added.

Vyacheslav Koloskov said the game with Portugal when the Russian team was crushed 1:7 was a disgrace to Russian football. "Well, things happen," he added.

Mr. Koloskov believes Russian football clubs' performance in European cup events was not satisfactory either.

However, youth teams performed decently in 2004, according to Mr. Koloskov. "Russian football has a future and I am glad that there are a lot of gifted players in the national youth team," he said.

Vyacheslav Koloskov also hailed Russia's football championship. He said it was the best national championship over the past few years. Mr. Koloskov believes Dmitry Loskov from Lokomotiv can be named the best player of the year in Russia. The best team, according to Mr. Koloskov, is Moscow's Lokomotiv, the winner of this year's championship, while Lokomotiv's Yury Semin is the best coach.

Mr. Koloskov said in 2005 they should focus on preparing for the qualification games ahead of the 2006 world cup.
