CARTAJENA (Spain), September 5 (RIA Novosti's Yuri Kryuchkov) - Russian battleships, the destroyer Neustrashimy (Fearless) and the large assault landing ship `Kaliningrad`, are holding a joint exercise with the Spanish patrol ship `Descubyerto` today, Sunday, September 5.

According to deputy commander of Russia's Baltic Fleet Vice Admiral Vasily Apanovich, the purpose of the exercise is to develop cooperation in prevention of incidents in open sea.

"The exercise is going to be quite short but very significant," the Vice Admiral pointed out.

According to him, the Russian Navy has been cooperating with its counterparts from many countries in view of the threats posed lately by the international terrorism worldwide.

In June 2004, the Neustrashimy and the Kaliningrad took part in the international naval exercise in the Baltic Sea held under the motto "Partnership for Peace" during which the forces involved practiced cooperation in countering terrorist threats.
