KURSK MARKS 61ST ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY IN BATTLE OF KURSK

KURSK, August 23 (RIA Novosti's Karina Smirnova) - Kursk and the Kursk region are celebrating the 61st anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Kursk, the regional administration reported on Monday.

Flowers were laid to the graves of the killed soldiers in this battle. Thousands of the Kursk inhabitants gathered from the early morning to give tribute to the memory of the fallen in the Great Patriotic War.

Memorial events started at 9 o'clock with laying flowers at the Stella to the Kursk Heroes. Then events continued at the Kursk Bulge Memorial. Flowers and wreaths were laid at the monument to Georgy Zhukov and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where the remains of Soviet soldiers, re-buried by volunteer searchers, now rest.

The anniversary events also took place at the Memorial to the Fallen in Kursk

In the evening, a gala concert will be held in the city's Red Square, and a salute will be given in honour of the Victory in the Battle of Kursk.

The Battle of Kursk lasted for 50 days and nights, from July 5 to August 23, 1943. In its tenseness and stubbornness this battle is unique.

In the Battle of Kursk the Soviet army defeated 30 elite divisions of the enemy. The German fascist troops lost about 500,000 servicemen, 1,500 tanks, 3,000 guns and 3,700 aircraft.

More than 100,000 Soviet servicemen were awarded orders and medals for their courage. The Battle of Kursk completed the radical change in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).
