MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow will host the Junior American Football European Cup for the first time.

Victor Ivanov, president of the Moscow American Football Federation, said at a RIA Novosti's press conference on Thursday that Russia's national team hoped for the success in the tournament to be held from July 24 to August 1 in the Olympiyski sports center. Contesting in the tournament will be 500 sportsmen from Denmark, Czechia, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden.

"Over the eight years the Russian team has made a great success, it became victorious in 2000 by winning silver medals of the European Cup and gold medals in 2002. It was made possible by opening children's American football schools in Moscow".

According to Vasily Dobryakov, main coach of Russia's national American football team, the tournament's favourites are the current European champions - Russians. Alongside, the national team's main coach mentioned Germany's team. "American football in that country is developed as nowhere in Europe. Impressive are the physical abilities of the German teenagers: at Euro-2002 the team's average height was 190 centimeters, the average weight being 95 kilograms", said Mr. Dobryakov.

However, Mr. Dobryakov said that other teams were also very strong and had chances to win.

"The Scandinavian national teams feature good discipline and combative spirit, the Frenchmen are fast and organized, the Czechs make progress every year and are prepared for great victories, the Austrians have already been victorious over us at the European cup", said the national team's coach.

Currently, Russia's national team, composed of young men under 19, trains 52 players. "The championship's entry will list only 45 sportsmen, but each of the 52 has chances", said Mr. Dobryakov.
