PRICES FOR FOODSTUFFS INCREASE IN BATUMI

TBILISI, May 3 (RIA Novosti) - Prices on foodstuffs and on essential goods increased in the capital of Adzharia, Batumi, thus provoking concerns among the local population, the Georgian TV company Mze reported on Monday.

According to the Novosti-Georgia news agency, after the bridges leading to the autonomy were blown up the prices for meat increased twice.

"Prices in Adzharia continue to grow. It is expected that the prices for fuel and essential goods will increase as well," the TV company reported.

According to Mze, the situation in Adzharia remains tense. The movement in the city is allowed only with special passes. People are not allowed in the streets after 11 p.m.

Evening walks among the beach are strictly prohibited, Mze reports.

The city is patrolled by specially equipped vehicles with armed people from various law-enforcement bodies. People in the streets and private cars are regularly inspected.

The streets of Batumi are illuminated by searchlights mounted on high-rise buildings, Mze informs.

According to the TV company, the security was enhanced at all facilities of strategic importance, on the territory of the Batumi port and on the coast of the Black Sea.
