MOSCOW FOR UN CENTRAL ROLE IN IRAQI SETTLEMENT

DUBLIN, April 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will support the return of Iraqi settlement under the aegis of the United Nations only in case it has the central role in the process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the press conference in Dublin.

"We call for putting the UN to work not only for the sake of it but because we are convinced that with its help we can pull together the political, religious and national strength of Iraq. Without this, resolving its problems is impossible", Lavrov said.

"Only with the help of the UN can we make it that the Iraqis, with the participation of their neighbours and the required guarantees from the United Nations Security Council, agree on how they will develop their country", the Russian minister believes.

"If this role of the United Nations is meant, we will back up the process", he assured.

At the same time, Sergei Lavrov recalled that Russia has many times spoken of the need to convene an international conference on Iraq with the participation of Iraqis, representatives of the neighbour countries and the United Nations Security Council.

"We still believe that this proposal should be heeded", said the head of the Russian foreign policy establishment.
