NEW YORK, April 13 (RIA Novosti) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has welcomed the release of Arjan Erkel, Dagestan coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres, and thanked the Russian authorities for their efforts.

The Dutch aid worker was abducted on August 12, 2002, by unknown armed individuals on the outskirts of Makhachkala, capital of Russia's North Caucasian autonomy of Dagestan. The UN and other international government and non-government organizations have actively worked to free him.

On Sunday, April 11, Erkel was released in a joint operation of Dagestani special services and the same evening was taken home to the Netherlands.
