WILL RUSSIAN FORESTLAND GO INTO PRIVATE HANDS?

MOSCOW, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov opposes the idea of introducing private ownership on forestland.

Speaking to reporters Friday, he said that in his opinion, the right of long-term lease by private companies and individuals was just enough and there was no need for sale. He pointed out growing public sentiment against this prospect and described it as a counterproductive move.

In March, the Fradkov Cabinet approved a revised edition of the Forest Code, which provides for the sale of forestlands into private hands after fifteen years of careful and considerate use under a lease agreement.
