VLADIVOSTOK, April 9 (RIA Novosti's Anatoly Ilyukhov) - A large-scale exercise aiming to fight simulated forest fires near the Russian-Chinese border got underway in Russia's Primorye (Maritime) territory (the Russian Far East) April 9.

Hundreds of forest fires were registered in the region last year, sweeping local nature preserves and protected forest areas, as well.

Talking to RIA Novosti territorial-administration officials noted that the exercise involved specialists from the Primorye territorial forestry service, the regional flying-tanker base, rescue teams from the national Emergency Situations Ministry, as well as border guards serving with the Federal Security Service's Pacific regional border-control department. People from 12 south Primorye forestries will also take part in this exercise.

Dry and warm weather now persisting all over the Primorye territory seems to be a major fire hazard.

Fire-fighters and forestry workers are mostly worried about numerous meadows now being set on fire by adults and teenagers alike. Such fires have already approached forests and townships in many cases, reports the Primorye territorial administration.
