MOSCOW, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - As a recent survey by the Public Opinion research foundation indicates, an overwhelming majority of the Russians deem it important that their country should retain its world space power status.

Spokespeople for the pollster told RIA Novosti that 82% of those interviewed for the survey believe that Russia should sustain its leading positions in space exploration. Only 10% of the pollees do not think it important.

About 50% of the Russian population came to believe two years ago that Russia would lose its leadership in the area with the destruction of its orbital station Mir. Today, only 35% of the Russians hold the opinion while 52% are certain that this country has been able to remain a major space power.

People from one hundred rural and urban communities in forty-four regions across the nation were interviewed for this survey.
