YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, April 8, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - The authorities of the Sakhalin and Kuril Islands have decided not to ban migratory bird hunting in the spring, the regional hunting department told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

In the neighbor regions of the Far East, migratory bird hunting has been banned because of the threat of bird flu.

In southern Sakhalin and Kurils, the hunting season for drakes, ducks and male woodcocks will open on May 1and will last for ten days. In northern Sakhalin and in the North-Kuril region the hunting season will last May 8-17. A license is required to hunt for migratory birds.
