GROZNY, April 7, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - A member of an illegal armed formation headed by notorious field commander Shamil Basayev has turned himself in, reported the regional operative HQ for the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus.

According to Ilya Shabalkin, a spokesman for the HQ, the terrorist is Umar Elmurzayev of a gang operating in the Vedeno district in the southeast of the republic. The militant handed over his Kalashnikov, over 200 cartridges and three grenades. He has been released home after signing a pledge not to leave the country. The police are verifying whether he was involved in any crimes that are not included in the amnesty.

According to the spokesman, Elmurzayev reported interesting information about sentiments among his former "comrades in arms." According to him, gang leaders are annoyed at the fact that money allocated by foreign sponsors does not reach Chechen militants.
