TEHRAN, April 7, 2004 (RIA Novosti's Nikolai Terekhov) - The Moscow-Tehran passenger railway line will open soon, Gennady Fadeyev, the president of Russian Railways, said after negotiations with Ahmad Khoram, Iran's minister of roads and transport.

"We are going to build a new Moscow-Tehran passenger railway line, something that has not existed since Soviet times," Mr. Fadeyev said.

"The schedule for the construction has not been determined yet because the issue needs to be coordinated with Azerbaijan [the line will go through its territory], but the tripartite negotiations on this and other issues of our cooperation will be held soon," he said.

"The resumption of this passenger railway line is real, and we will find a common language in solving this problem on a tripartite basis," Mr. Fadeyev said.

"The estimated cost to implement this project is $177 million," he added.
