TBILISI, APRIL 6, 2004, (RIA Novosti) - Members of the Adzharian Opposition parties Nasha Adzharia and Kmara took to the streets in the downtown Batumi Tuesday to demand resignation of the incumbent leader, Aslan Abashidze. Adzharia is a breakaway region in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Three Kmara activists-Irakli Chkhetia, Archil Topochava, and Irakli Khorbaladze-were detained by local police, only to be released half-an-hour later, the Novosti-Georgia news agency reports.

Nasha Adzharia members told reporters they would continue to stage protests in Batumi until Abashidze stepped down as head of the autonomy.

Today's Opposition rally was the third one in a week. On Monday and over the weekend, protesters launched air-balloons bearing slogans such as "Aslan, go!"
