TWO SUICIDE BOMBERS TRY TO KILL INGUSH PRESIDENT

MOSCOW, April 6, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - According to the preliminary investigation, two suicide bombers made attempts on the life of Murat Zyazikov, Ingush president, this morning when he was going from Nazran, Ingush capital, to the neighboring district.

The republic's prosecutors told RIA Novosti that two people were in the car that exploded near the president's cortege. As a result of the explosion, the jeep with the president's bodyguards sustained serious damage and cannot be repaired. Five bodyguards were wounded, and the president received slight wounds.

According to the senior assistant of the republic's prosecutor, Zinaida Tomova, the Mercedes where Zyazikov was sitting was hit by the blast wave but thanks to the bullet proof car the president was saved.

The explosion left a crater, one meter deep and 3.5 meters wide.

Now experts are studying the fragments of the terrorists' bodies. Their sex cannot be identified yet, the spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said.

An inquiry has been launched into the incident on the basis of three articles of the Russian criminal code - an attempt on life, illegal storing of explosives and an attempt on the life of a state and public figure.
