MOSCOW, April 5, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Special services of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are closely cooperating in the fight against terrorism, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev said at a Moscow news conference.

"Special services of our countries are closely cooperating to prevent new terrorist attacks," he answered a RIA Novosti correspondent who asked about the situation in the region in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Tashkent and other Uzbek cities.

"We understand and support Uzbekistan's position which was declared after the terrorist attacks," said the Kazakh minister.

He recalled that immediately after the terrorist attacks that took place in Uzbekistan last week, security was increased to prevent such attacks in Kazakhstan, in particular the border between the two countries was temporarily sealed.

"The situation in Kazakhstan is calm now, but we are remaining vigilant," said Mr. Tokayev.
