MOSCOW, April 5, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Russia invariably supports the line of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, aimed at adapting the international organization to new challenges and threats, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov said at the opening ceremony of the Moscow international Model UN-2004.

He described Kofi Annan's visit to Moscow as proving the UN's support for Russia.

"Kofi Annan has had a number of meetings with the Russian leadership. During these meetings, the Russian side said that Russia remained loyal to UN goals and principles, and supported Secretary General Kofi Annan's line to adapt the UN to new challenges and threats," stressed Mr. Fedotov.

In his words, any criticism of the UN is eventually the self-criticism of its member nations for their inability to provide the implementation of the adopted decisions. "The UN is strong when its member countries are committed to UN principles and when they make its work effective and fruitful," said the Russian deputy foreign minister.

He remarked that the multilateral and unilateral approach to international problems had become particularly acute. Those who support unilateral approach refer to the UN mechanisms as clumsy. However, these mechanisms make it possible to adopt decisions that take into account every country's interests, stressed the high-level Russian diplomat.
