VLADIMIR LOGINOV RE-ELECTED GOVERNOR OF KORYAKIA AUTONOMY

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, April 5, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Vladimir Loginov, incumbent Governor of the autonomous area of Koryakia (Russia's Far Eastern Federal District), has won the second round of the gubernatorial election in the autonomy, the local election commission told RIA Novosti.

50.88% of voters supported Mr Loginov, 39.29% voted for his rival Boris Chuyev, the prosecutor of the autonomy. 7.16% of the electorate voted "against all." A total of 68.92% of the electorate took part in the poll. In the second round, the winner was determined by a simple majority of votes.

Ten candidates stood for governor in the first round, which coincided in time with the March 14 presidential election. None of the contenders scored the required 50% plus one vote.

It was the initiative of Mr Loginov, whose term of office expires in December 2004, to hold early elections.

Mr Loginov, who was General Director of the Koryakgeoldobycha mining company, was elected governor in 2000 when he secured the support of 54.23% of voters.
