    DEMENTYEVA DEFEATS VENUS WILLIAMS IN MIAMI TOURNAMENT

    NEW YORK, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Yelena Dementyeva, a Russian tennis player, qualified for the semifinals of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami. The tennis tournament has $3.06 million in prize money.

    On Wednesday, Dementyeva, ranked 8th by Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated Venus Williams, seeded second in the tournament, in an intensely fought three-set match.

    Dementyeva confidently won the first set, 6-3. Venus Williams won a break point to win the turbulent second set, 7-5.

    Each athlete won her serve in the final set. The American had a chance to break Dementyeva's serve and win the match at 6-5, but the Russian player won her serve to send the match to a tie breaker.

    Dementyeva immediately took control of the tie breaker and retained a 2-1 and 4-2 lead. She won the third set, 7-6 (7-3).

    In the semifinals, Yelena Dementyeva will play against Nadezhda Petrova of Russia, who easily defeated Nathalie Dechy of France, 6-2, 6-2.
