ADZHARIA CANCELS STATE OF EMERGENCY, GEORGIA CALLS OFF ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AGAINST THE AUTONOMY

TBILISI, MARCH 19, 2004. (RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT MARINA KVARATSKHELIYA. On the instruction of Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, on the Thursday-Friday midnight all the economic sanctions, imposed on Adzharia (the autonomous republic of Georgia) on March 15, were called off.

Georgian interior minister Georgy Baramidze told RIA Novosti that the movement of trains in the direction of Adzharia was fully restored, the blockade of the Batumi port was cancelled and the Batumi airport opened.

In addition, trucks can now move without restriction through the Sarpi check point on the Georgian-Turkish border. The banking operations with the autonomy have been restored: all the accounts of the legal entities in Adzharia, which were frozen by the National Bank of Georgia, have been released.

Baramidze personally observed the beginning of the movement of ships, which stayed these days in the Poti port, towards Batumi.

Aslan Abashidze, in his turn, cancelled the curfew which was introduced in Batumi, and the state of emergency introduced on the territory of Adzharia in November 24, 2003.
