MOSCOW BACKS UP INITIATIVE ON URGENT CALLING OF UN SECURITY COUNCIL SESSION ON KOSOVO

MOSCOW, March 18, 2004 - (RIA Novosti). Russia with deep concern perceived the news of the outburst of inter-ethnic violence in Kosovo, which resulted in many people killed, wounded and injured, says the statement by the official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Yakovenko.

Russia resolutely condemns the incident and demands that the instigators of the riots should be found and punished, the statement says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry calls on the conflicting parties, first of all the Albanian majority in the province, for immediate cessation of violence.

Moscow believes that the UN mission in Kosovo as well as the peacekeeping forces must take urgent measures aimed at restoring the law and order, ensuring appropriate security to representatives of all ethnic communities of the province.

"The current events have demonstrated the multi-complexity of problems in the province, the necessity of weighted and comprehensive approach to the Kosovo settlement.

"Russia supports the initiative of Serbia and Montenegro on urgent calling the session of the UN Security Council for Kosovo and is ready to take active part in searches for the solution to the Kosovo problem', the statement of the official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry says.
