    FEDERATION COUNCIL, US SENATE SIGN AGREEMENT ON COOPERATION

    MOSCOW, March 18, 2004. (RIA Novosti). On Thursday Russian Federation Council members and US Senators signed an agreement on cooperation within the framework of the inter-parliamentary working group, Federation Council - US Senate. It outlines the further activities of this group.

    According to co-chairman of the working group, US Senator Trent Lott, the Russian and US parliaments will cooperate on several international problems, such counter-terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation and liberalization of international trade.

    It will help us develop relations and solve arising problems, the American senator said.

    The Russian co-chairman of the group, the head of the Federation Council's international committee, Mikhail Margelov, stressed that the working group would maintain contacts many issues. "The sides will make reports on the improvement of Russian and US legislation and work out joint projects," he said.

    According to Trent Lott, the US Senate views Russia as a friend and an ally.

    "No matter what problems arise in our relations, there will never be confrontation between us," Mikhail Margelov said.
