"I express condolences to the victims of the terrorist acts in Spain. The terrifying tragedy has shown once again that no one can defend himself single-handed. The world community must pool its efforts in combating international terrorism," Mr. Lavrov said at his first press-conference in the capacity of the head of the Russian foreign-policy department.
The growing number of terrorist acts points to the need to wage an uncompromising and resolute struggle against international terrorism, said the minister. The countries of the world must pool their efforts in the struggle against terrorism, which must be waged under the aegis of the UN and its Security Council, said Mr. Lavrov. In his words, for this purpose, the legislation of various countries must be brought in line with each other.
"There can be no compromises in combating terrorism," said Mr. Lavrov. He recalled that on the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, set forth by him in his speech in the UN in September last year, a group on combating terrorism was formed and a resolution on averting new threats and meeting new challenges was unanimously adopted.
"While tackling the problem of international terrorism, we must also tackle other international problems that create breeding grounds for it: hunger, poverty, lingering conflicts and the lack of health services," noted Mr. Lavrov.
