MOSCOW, March 17, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Moscow insists that Qatar should allow the jailed Russian nationals to return home, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Mr. Lavrov recalled that that position of Russia had already been voiced by ex-Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.

Three Russian security officers were arrested in Qatar on February 18 on charges of involvement in the assassination of a Chechen separatist leader, Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev. One of the officers, who holds a diplomatic passport, was released later.

These Russian nationals were staying in Qatar, collecting and analysing information as part of the effort against international terrorism, and they did not violate local law.

The Qatar authorities have refused to free the prisoners seeking to put them to trial.
