POTI, MARCH 15 (RIA NOVOSTI) - During an inspection trip of the posts of the police and the interior troops, held by Georgian Interior Minister Georgy Baramidze in the Poti district (Western Georgia) near the Choloki river on the administrative border with Adzharia (Georgia's autonomous republic), several submachine gun bursts were heard from the opposite bank, the news agency Novosti-Georgia quotes the interior minister as saying to journalists.

"When I was inspecting the posts put today along the Choloki river to maintain order (a difficult situation emerged there after the Adzharian authorities blocked road traffic towards Batumi) several bursts from automatic weapons were heard from the opposite bank," Baramidze said upon return to Poti.

"It has not been established in what direction the fire was made, maybe in the air, but anyhow it was an unpleasant incident," Georgy Bartamidze said.

He noted that he has ordered the Georgian law enforcement agencies not to succumb to provocation, not to open fire in response but preserve enhanced vigilance.
