IRAN INTERESTED IN EARLIEST PREPARATION OF CASPIAN STATUS CONVENTION

BAKU, March 15, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- The Iranian president's special envoy for the Caspian Mehti Safari has said to reporters in Baku that the Iranian side is "interested in the earliest preparation of a convention on a status of the Caspian Sea." On Monday he arrived in the capital of Azerbaijan for participation in a session of the special working group on the Caspian status at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the five Caspian states. The session will be held in Baku on March 16 to 17. Mr. Safari voiced the hope that "movements forward in this matter" will be made at the session.

According to the special representative of the president of Iran, the Iranian Parliament has already ratified the convention on the protection of the Caspian environment and Teheran is waiting for similar steps to be taken by the parliaments of the other countries.
