RUSSIAN ATHLETES CALL WORLD TO JOIN HANDS AGAINST TERROR: OLYMPIC CHAMP

MOSCOW, MARCH 12, RIA NOVOSTI - An all-Russia forum, Sports against Terrorism, deserves to be upgraded to an international level, insists Dmitri Svatkovsky, Olympic champion and one of those who stood at the forum cradle.

The forum is a harbinger of non-violent anti-terror combat. The world has no analogue to it for now. "It is our duty to emerge on the international scene. We intend to give the organisation an international scope quite soon," he said.

"You cannot say for sure now that you are safe in whatever country in the world. Yesterday's Madrid terror acts proved that once again. Terrorism endangers all without exception," stressed Mr. Svatkovsky.

The forum will appeal to active and retired athletes of the whole world to join hands against terrorism. It is in duty bound to bring together all nations' know-how of anti-terror combat, he went on.

Moscow and Madrid are among the bidders to host the 2012 Olympics. The athlete does not think terror tragedies in those cities will be taken into consideration in venue votes. Blasts shook many countries' capitals as terrorism has become a global challenge, he added.

The forum Sports against Terrorism was established January last. As its founding fathers hold, sports have every chance to strongly oppose terror by attracting young people whom terrorists may otherwise entice.
