GAZPROM, BELTRANSGAZ FAIL TO COME TO TERMS ON GAS TRANSIT, DELIVERIES

MOSCOW, MARCH 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Gazprom and Belarus's Beltransgaz have again failed this Friday to reach an agreement on Russian gas deliveries and transit across Belarus, reports the Gazprom company.

"Talks with Beltransgaz on Russian gas transit and deliveries in 2004 have ended without any result again," said the Russian company's spokesman.

The Belarussian side suggested doubling the transit tariff as against last year while buying gas for the price of $46.68 per cubic meter, that is lower than the "basic" one of $50.

"We do not understand why Beltransgaz, which is offering unacceptable and non-market prices, is so optimistic. Gazprom can supply the republic with gas but not to its own detriment," said Gazprom press secretary Sergei Kupriyanov.
