NEW INTERIOR MINISTER OUTLINES PRIORITIES

MOSCOW, March 12, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - The fight against terrorism, corruption, organized crime and economic crimes will be priority tasks of the Russian Interior Ministry, new minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said adding that counter terrorism will be the top priority.

In addition, the ministry will focus on the fight against drug addiction, children's homelessness and social defense of policemen. "Policemen should arouse respect," Mr. Nurgaliyev stressed.

The Russian President appointed him Russian Interior Minister on March 9, 2004. Since October 20, 2003 Rashid Nurgaliyev was acting Interior Minister in connection with Boris Gryzlov's pre-election leave.
