JAKARTA, March 12, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - On Friday, Russians in Surabaya, a city in Eastern Java, voted in the Russian presidential elections. The early voting was organized for a team of Russian technical specialists servicing Russian Su airplanes.

During the rainy season, it would be difficult for the specialists to reach the central polling station in Jakarta from the Indonesian Air Force base on Eastern Java, where the airplanes are deployed, because roads all over the island are washed out and blocked with landslides.

"This is not the first time I have worked abroad, but it is the first time I've voted abroad," the head of the team of specialists, Igor Kuznetsov, told RIA Novosti in a telephone interview from Surabaya. "It is very nice that we have the chance to take part in the elections as full fledged citizens."

Thirty-one people voted in Surabaya, said Russian Consul in Indonesia Gennady Kazachenko. He is also the deputy chairman of the district election committee.
