SERGEI IVANOV APPOINTED RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTER

MOSCOW, MARCH 9. /RIA NOVOSTI / -- Sergei Ivanov preserves his post in the Russian cabinet: he has been appointed the Defence Minister of the Russian Federation.

Vladimir Putin has inked the corresponding decree.

Sergei Borisovich Ivanov was born on January 31, 1953 in Leningrad /St.Petersburg/ into a family of white-collar workers. Graduated from the translators' branch of the philological department of the Leningrad State University, finished the KGB (State Security Committee)Higher Courses in Minsk in 1976, the 101th school of the 1st Main Department of the KGB /now the Andropov Red Banner Institute/ in 1981.

In 1976 was doing service in the KGB of the USSR. After finishing the KGB Higher Courses in Minsk was sent to work at the State Security Department for Leningrad and the region.

In the late 70s did service in the central office of the 1st Main Department of the KGB /foreign intelligence/. In all, worked during two decades in the Foreign Intelligence system, held different posts in the central apparatus and abroad /Africa, Europe/. In the Foreign Intelligence Service was the second in command of a department. In the mid-90s became of the youngest generals in the Foreign Intelligence Service.

In August 1998 - deputy director of the Federal Security Service-chief of the department for analysis, forecast and strategic planning of the Russian FSB service.

On November 15, 1999 to March 28, 2001 - secretary of the Russian Security Council. Re-appointed to the post on May 27, 2000.

Since March 28, 2001 - Defence Minister of the Russian Federation.

Sergei Ivanov's service rank is Lieutenant-General. On November 9, 2000 President Vladimir Putin signed the decree discharging the secretary of the Russian Security Council from military service. Sergei Ivanov held the post of the Security Council secretary and now holds the post of the Defence Minister of the Russian Federation as a civilian.

Good command of English and Swedish languages.

Married, has two sons.
