TBILISI, March 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Georgian leadership will pay more attention to the problems of the Kodori gorge on the border with the rebellious autonomy of Abkhazia. This was said Monday in Tbilisi by Georgian National Security Council Secretary Vano Merabishvili, reports Novosti-Georgia.

"On behalf of the Georgian leadership I declare that maximal attention will be paid to the problems of the Kodori gorge and its population, and maximal aid will be provided. The Kodori gorge is a strategically important place," Mr. Merabishvili said.

In recent years there were cases of "non-targeted spending" (misappropriation - Ed.) of state-allocated funds to provide for the needs of the Kodori gorge, but we understand at that how strained the situation is there," Mr. Merabishvili said.

He said the Georgian leadership will prevent suchlike facts in the future and specific directions on which funds will be allotted to the Kodori gorge will be determined soon.

The Kodori gorge is now the only region of Abkhazia, which is under the jurisdiction of Georgian central authorities and which is controlled by Georgian authorities.
