64.8 PER CENT OF RUSSIANS INTEND TO VOTE FOR PUTIN

MOSCOW, March 5, 2004. (RIA Novosti). According to the data of the Public Opinion Foundation, 64.8 per cent of Russians intend to vote for Vladimir Putin and 14 per cent - for other candidates.

Nikolai Kharitonov, the Communist and Agrarian-backed candidate, holds the second place with 6.1 per cent.

Independent candidates Irina Khakamada and Sergei Glazyev have 2.9 and 2.8 per cent of potential votes.

Candidate of the Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) Oleg Malyshkin has 1.5 per cent, Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov - 0.6 per cent, and Ivan Rybkin - 0.1 per cent.

Two per cent of the polled will vote against all candidates and 7.7 per cent will not participate in the elections at all.

All in all, 1,600 people from 40 regions were polled on February 28-29.

The publication of presidential nominees' ratings will be stopped a week before the March 14 elections.
