INFLATION IN RUSSIA DROPS IN FEBRUARY TO 1 PER CENT

MOSCOW, March 5, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Inflation in Russia dropped in February to one per cent from 1.8 per cent in January, reported the State Statistics Committee, or Goskomstat.

Prices for foodstuffs increased month-on-month by 1.6 per cent, for non-food goods, by 0.5 per cent, and for paid services, by 4.1 per cent.

In seven of Russia's 89 constituent members goods and services went up by more than two per cent. The record was set by the Chukotka autonomous area, the easternmost Russian territory opposite America's Alaska: there the prices shot up by 4.1 per cent for the month.

In Moscow, prices grew 0.3 per cent (2.8 per cent since the beginning of the year) and in St Petersburg 0.9 per cent (2.8 per cent since the beginning of the year).
