WASHINGTON, March 5, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Russian citizens who live in the United States organized a committee to support President Vladimir Putin's reelection. The first meeting of the committee was held at the Russian Cultural Center in Washington at the initiative of the local Russian community.

The participants of the session said that widely publicizing Mr. Putin's role in strengthening relations between Russia and the United States was their main goal. To accomplish this goal the committee plans to set up a Web site. The members of the committee also plan to open branches in other U.S. cities with Russian communities.

Alexei Obolensky, a Washington resident and a descendant of an ancient Russian royal family, is the chairman of the committee.

The deputy chairman of the committee and honorary dean of the Orthodox St. Nicholas Church in Washington, Dmitry Grigoryev, said Mr. Putin's supporters wanted to see a just and honest attitude toward Russia in America. Mr. Grigoryev said, "Putin can unite all of Russia - the modern and the past- and wants to do so."
