MOSCOW, March 4, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Russian nationals have deposited an aggregate sum of 1,540 billion rubles (some $54 billion) on their ruble and foreign currency accounts as of January 1, 2004. This means a 47% hike compared to January 1, 2003, reports Goskomstat, Russia's state statistics committee.

Foreign currency deposits account for 30% of the sum, the ruble equivalent of which made up 464.8 billion (some $16.3 billion) as of January 1, 2004.

Russians still prefer the state-run Savings Bank to any other bank. It accounts for 62.7% of aggregate deposits. However, this indicator went somewhat down last year as it reached 66.8% as of January 1, 2003.
