About 10,000 uniforms have already been brought to the Georgian port of Poti from Italy's Chiugia as the grant of the Italian Defence Ministry. Their total cost is approximately eight million euros. A special commission will be set up at the general staff of the Georgian armed forces to distribute the uniforms.
Participants in the news conference at the ambassadorial residence said that the uniform shipments are the first step in cooperation between the two defence establishments. Italy is going to continue giving help to the Georgian armed forces.
Their interaction is expected to be broadened after the Italian and Georgian parliaments ratify the 1997 agreement on cooperation in the military field.
On the basis of the cooperation agreement, said the new conference participants, the Italian side alongside technical assistance will assist Georgia in the preparation of alpine and naval units, training of Georgian pilots at the Italian Air Academy, training of the all-arms cadre. This year the Italian Defence Ministry plans to give Georgia about 3,000 tonnes of fuel and non-military vehicles.
