MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to establish the medal to commemorate "The 60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945)" and to pay tribute to the war veterans for their great feat, heroism and selflessness.

The text of the decree was published at the Russian President's official website on Wednesday.

The medal will be conferred on servicemen who fought in the Soviet Armed Forces during the Great Patriotic War, guerrillas and members of underground organizations who acted in occupied areas of the USSR, home front workers and foreigners who made an important contribution into the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

In addition, this medal will be awarded to people who worked for at least six months in the period from June 22, 1941 till May 9, 1945, former minor prisoners of concentration camps, ghettos and others sites of forced confinement created by the nazis and their allies during World War II.

On August 19, 2003 one of Kursk veterans offered the President to establish a medal to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. The President promised to think it over. The next day he gave relevant instructions to the premier and cabinet members.

The first jubilee medal in honor of the victory in the Great Patriotic War appeared in 1965. The medal was established by the order of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Council of May 7, 1965 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the victory.

Since then jubilee medals were established on each anniversary of the victory.
