IRKUTSK, MARCH 1, 2004 (RIA Novosti's Alexander Batalin) - Sergei Mironov, Speaker of the Federation Council, or Russia's upper house of parliament, said he was hopeful that Qatar would prove its allegiance to the anti-terrorist camp. His comment came after Qatar police's detention of three Russian intelligence officers suspected of being behind the murder of former Chechen president Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev.
Speaking to this RIA Novosti correspondent in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, Mironov stressed that the detainees had nothing to do with the killing of Yandarbiyev, who had been living in Qatar in exile. According to the Speaker, the Russian government is now doing everything it can to get the men out of jail.
"There's been a lot of talk lately about the united front of the anti-terror coalition. Now it's about time some specific example demonstrated its efficiency," Mironov pointed out.
