MOSCOW, March 1, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- In the North Caucasian military district, the pilot of a plane with failed instruments and engine has made a landing, RIA Novosti learnt from Alexander Drobyshevski, public relations chief officer of the Russian Air Force.

The incident happened at the district's airfield during a Su-25 training flight, piloted by Major Alexander Kostryukov, navigator of an attack aviation regiment.

"In climbing two DC generators failed, putting out of order all the flight and navigation instruments," Drobyshevski said.

The pilot had to use repeated instruments. In a few seconds the left engine failed. Restarting did not work because the internal batteries got discharged and the trainer plane was fully de-energized, radio communication with the flight control officer was lost.

"The flight rules say that in such a situation the pilot must eject. Instead, Major Kostryukov reached the airfield and made a blind landing," Drobyshevski said.

For courage and top professionalism Colonel-General Vladimir Mikhailov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, recommended Alexander Kostryukov for decoration with the Order of Courage, Drobyshevski said.
