MOSCOW, March 1, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent) - According to the report of Russian presidential candidate Irina Khakamada's election headquarters, she sent a suit on Monday to the Russian Prosecutor General demanding that a criminal case be instigated against Speaker of the Federation Council Sergei Mironov in line with Part 2 of Article 129 of the Russian Criminal Code (slander).

Besides, Khakamada sent a suit on honour protection to the Kalininsky federal court of St. Petersburg. According to the suit, the Speaker of the upper house and the Russian State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company are the defendants.

According to Khakamada, during televised debates on the RTR channel last Friday, Mironov called the financiers of her election campaign "criminals." On the same day, when commenting on Khakamada's intention of going to court and to the Prosecutor General's Office, the Speaker of the Federation Council told reporters that "Russia's political life should be freed from oligarchs' dictatorship." "It is well known that they eagerly finance different election campaigns, seek to bribe deputies and influence the activity of all power branches," said Mironov.

"Presumably, when the famous representative of the oil business, who is now staying outside Russia, declared his intention of financing Irina Khakamada's election campaign, he thereby did her disservice," said the head of the Federation Council.
