    FEDERATION COUNCIL CHAIRMAN ADVOCATES STRICTER CONTROL OVER FORMATION OF HIGHEST RUSSIAN JUDGES' CORPS

    MOSCOW, February 27 (RIA Novosti) - On Friday Sergei Mironov, chairman of the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament) stated to journalists that it was necessary to exercise stricter control over formation of the Russian highest judges' Corp.

    The Federation council speaker stated that the Federation council approved composition of the Supreme Qualifying Collegium of judges, candidates for positions of chairmen of the highest courts (Supreme, Constitutional and Supreme Arbitration court) and that should not be a formal voting procedure.

    He stressed that "the Federation Council should be responsible for the judges it appointed". According to Mironov, corruption was spreading across the judges' community, including federal courts.

    In this connection the head of the Federation Council stated his intention in the course of the administrative reform carried out in the country to expand authorities of the upper house of the parliament to acquire control over activities of judges.
