PRESIDENT PUTIN: TIMBER SHOULD BE PROCESSED IN RUSSIA

KRASNOYARSK, February 27, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Yelena Glushakova) - The Krasnoyarsk region should go into the procession of timber instead of its export, Russian President Vladimir Putin believes.

It is necessary to establish technological production in the region, Vladimir Putin said at his meeting with students of Siberian technological university.

"Export of the round timber should be stopped," he stressed.

In response to one of the students' question, concerning the perspectives of the timber industry in the region, Vladimir Putin noted that "the timber industry is the perspective course of the region's economic development.

At the same time Putin drew students' attention to the environment problems.

"The development of the timber production sector would certainly require interference with the nature," the Russian President noted.

In the course of the visit to the paper-mill the Russian President noted on the harsh smell at the production. The workers of the paper-mill told him that "it's how money smells." Therefore, the Russian President said that the timber processing industry "should be developed at a high level and wisely in order not to damage the environment."
