KRASNOYARSK, February 27th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent Yelena Glushakova) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has come out for raising the wages of university teachers.

At his meeting with students of the Siberian Technological University in Krasnoyarsk on Friday, the Russian president said there were two ways to solve the housing problem of young families.

"The first way is to increase wages for university teachers - it is the simplest, most honest and effective means," the president said in an answer to a question from a student who was offered to stay to work at the university, but will not be able to buy any housing for a teacher's wages then.

The head of state noted that last year wages of university teachers were raised. However, Putin deems it insufficient. "They should be increased many-fold," stressed the head of state.

The second way of solving the housing problem of young families is to make mortgages affordable, said the president. According to him, the government is upgrading the legislation to this end. Mortgages will be far cheaper, and thereby more affordable for the population.

Besides, Putin said, additional support is needed for young specialists. "The government is now drafting proposals in this area," said the Russian leader.
